Lewis Hamilton says he wouldn’t have backed out of his scrap by Charles Leclerc at the GP and the set”could have collided” – when he was not chasing a sixth Formula 1 name.
Hamilton was searching down race-winner Leclerc for much of Sunday’s enthralling Grand Prix and the set went wheel-to-wheel coming the next chicane, but the Mercedes motorist was thrown off the trail and needed to cut across the run-off area to avoid contact.
Hamilton questions judgment that is Leclerc
FIA describe Leclerc’yellow card’
A crash would probably have destroyed both drivers’ races, and Mercedes manager Toto Wolff asserted that Hamilton”had been instrumental rather than making it an incident”.
But asked if he would have done anything else when the F1 2019 tournament was resolved, Hamilton confessed:”I wouldn’t have moved. We’d have ”
As he seems to become only the second driver in history with six crowns, hamilton is 63 points ahead of closest challenger Valtteri Bottas using seven races left.
“The driver which goes to the Drivers’ Championship saved Charles and rescued himself,” added Wolff, who sensed Leclerc’s movements were”maybe over the line”.
“Lewis understood exactly what he was doinghe did not lose any pieces or components in that episode, but he would have equally decided,’I am not going to let this happen’, and put the 2 cars out.”
Hamilton looking forward to Leclerc battles
Hamilton contested the stewards’ decision to not inflict a brand new penalty on Leclerc and labelled the driving “dangerous” on staff radio – but insisted he had no problem with”one of the most respectful drivers” in Leclerc.
“There is no lack of respect,” Hamilton told reporters. “We do not have a problem, we are not in a fight, I congratulated him when he got out of the vehicle.
“Charles is one of the very respectful motorists. This is actually the very first time I have gone and using a new driver, you understand maybe and how they approach different scenarios position your vehicle otherwise next time. Perhaps I will do a better job next time.”
Hamilton continued:”There is zero issue with people he did an exceptional job and I really don’t have any problem with it, it’s what it is.
“I have not talked to him and also we do not have a issue but if we get a moment together we may talk, only reverse functions and be certain he is cool that if I am able and that happens and that’s cool and that is how we are rushing.
“Out of what I know entering the race you’re supposed to make a difference, today I really don’t know whether that is how it is. Nonetheless, it’s good that we can race hard and today was.
“We will continue to race and I’m looking forward to a lot more races ”
Hamilton joyful to’race such as this’
Leclerc has been handed the black-and-white flag by race stewards, F1’s version of a’yellow card’, and Wolff stated he considers that rule will make contact between the motorists”common practice”.
However while Hamilton called for more consistency when it came to rules and penalties, he said he’s pleased to race difficult.
“If that is the way we’re permitted to race then I will race like this,” he said. “As long as you know that you are allowed to not leave a car width as an example, provided that you are not contradicting us and there is a clear message.
“So you’re permitted to run wide even if a person is there and you simply receive a warning flag, and you merely require that once to potentially maintain the guy behind you.
“As long since it’s apparent that that’s the way moving ahead it is ok so I understand how to go into battle and it is the exact same for all of the drivers.”
