Lewis Hamilton says he wouldn’t have backed from his scrap with Charles Leclerc at the GP and the set”could have collided” – if he was not pursuing a sixth Formula 1 name.
The Mercedes driver had been squeezed off the trail and had to cut across the region to avoid contact and the set went wheel-to-wheel approaching the second chicane, although hamilton was hunting down race-winner Leclerc for much of Grand Prix enthralling.
Hamilton queries judgment that is Leclerc
FIA explain Leclerc’yellow card’
A crash would probably have destroyed both motorists’ races, and Mercedes manager Toto Wolff asserted that Hamilton”had been instrumental in not making it an episode”.
But asked if he would have done anything differently when the F1 2019 championship was solved, Hamilton confessed:”I wouldn’t have moved. We’d have collided.”
Hamilton is 63 points with seven races ahead of closest challenger Valtteri Bottas left as he seems to become only the second driver in history together with six shingles.
“The driver which goes for the Drivers’ Championship stored Charles and saved himself” added Wolff, who felt Leclerc’s movements were”maybe over the line”.
“Lewis knew what he was doing, he did not lose any bits or parts in that incident, but he could have equally decided,’I’m not going to let it happen’, and set the two cars outside.”
Hamilton looking forward to more conflicts that are Leclerc
Hamilton questioned the stewards’ decision to not inflict a harsher punishment on Leclerc and branded the driving because”reckless” on staff radio – but later insisted that he had no issue with”among the very respectful drivers” at Leclerc.
“There is not any lack of admiration,” Hamilton told reporters. “We don’t have a problem, we aren’t in a fight, I congratulated him if he got out of the vehicle.
“Charles is among the most respectful motorists. This is the first time that I have gone and with a new driver, you learn perhaps and how they approach different situations position your car differently next time. Perhaps I’ll do a much better job next time.”
Hamilton continued:”There is zero issue with us, he did an exceptional job and I really don’t have any difficulty with this, it’s what it really is.
“I haven’t talked to him and also we don’t have a issue but if we receive a moment together we might chat, just reverse functions and make sure he is cool that when I am able and that happens and that is cool and that’s how we’re racing.
“From what I understand entering the race you are supposed to leave a difference, today I don’t know whether that is how it is. Nonetheless, it’s good that we are able to race and today proved to be.
“We’ll continue to race and I am looking forward to a lot more races together.”
Hamilton pleased to’race such as that’
Leclerc was handed the black-and-white flag by race stewards, F1’s variation of a’yellow card’, and Wolff said he believes that rule is likely to make contact between the motorists”common practice”.
However while Hamilton called for consistency in regards to penalties and rules, he said he is happy to race hard.
“If that is how we’re allowed to race then I will race like this,” he said. “As long as you understand that you are allowed to not leave a car width as an instance, as long as you aren’t contradicting us and there’s a clear message.
“So you’re allowed to run broad even if someone is there and you simply get a warning sign, and you only require that once to possibly maintain the guy behind you.
“As long since it’s apparent that that’s how moving forward it is ok so I know how to go into battle and it is the exact same for all of the motorists.”
